Midwest BunFest Rescue & Bunny Welfare Organization Partners

Our Partners

One of the primary goals of OHRR and Midwest Bunfest 2011 is to build relationships and collaborations with other animal rescue organizations.

There are many animal rescue organizations throughout the Midwest serving their local communities and providing animal rescue, education and other services.

OHRR plans to build a community of these organizations, both small and large, to provide us with a network of like-minded organizations who can collaborate on rescue efforts, share best practices, provide moral support, exchange information, partner on events and get to know each other.

OHRR believes that by meeting and working together, animal rescue organizations throughout the region will benefit from the knowledge and experiences of others, increase their ability to reach areas beyond their local community, and contribute to the well being and health of companion animals!

BunFest is very pleased and honored to have Phyllis O'Beollain, from the Dayton Area Rabbit Network (DARN), serving as the Coordinator of our Rescue Partners this year!

Please check out our links to partner organizations and support your local animal rescue organization!

Ohio House Rabbit Rescue
Columbus, Ohio

Picture
Mission

The mission of Ohio House Rabbit Rescue is to establish and operate a Center for rescued abandoned pet rabbits, offer a robust adoption program, and provide educational resources and programming on the proper care of rabbits as indoor companions.

Vision

Ohio House Rabbit Rescue envisions a community where all pet rabbits live indoors as companions and have access to a proper diet, habitat, and regular veterinary care for the duration of their life.

History:  Ohio House Rabbit Rescue (OHRR) was founded in 2009 when longtime rabbit owner, Beverly May, saw the need for a rabbit-specific rescue in Central Ohio.  After rescuing nine abandoned rabbits, May realized that not all domestic rabbits in the community were as lucky.  In fact every year in Central Ohio alone, over 900 rabbits are offered for surrender at animal shelters or rescues that are often already at full capacity.  Rabbits not placed in a shelter are frequently released outdoors, a death sentence for the fragile, prey animal.

OHRR seeks a solution to this animal welfare problem by establishing and operating the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue Center, a facility that will provide temporary housing and care for 50-75 rabbits at a time.  Until the Center is established, OHRR is helping rabbits and their owners through educational programming, veterinary referral services, and Low-Cost Spay/Neuter programs.  OHRR also has an active network of foster homes to temporarily house rabbits until we can place them in a loving, forever home.

Major Goals:

1)      Increase our rescues to 50 rabbits and increase our adoptions to 25 rabbits.

2)      Begin a Capital Campaign to fund the development of Ohio House Rabbit Rescue Center, a rescue, education and adoption facility in Franklin County.

3)      Implement a Low-Cost Spay/Neuter program to assist rabbit owners in Ohio.

4)      Increase the attendance of Midwest BunFest

5)      Host the first annual Run Your Buns Off 5K and Little Hopper Fun Run/Walk.

6)      Develop a relationship with and host adoption events at local pet supplies stores to raise awareness about rabbit care and increase adoptions.

OHRR is incorporated in Ohio and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Dayton Area Rabbit Network

Picture
The Dayton Area Rabbit Network, or DARN, is a not for profit organization, founded in 2008, by a group of rabbit lovers living in the Miami Valley. We work to ensure that all house rabbits live happy, healthy lives through discussion, education and volunteer work.

Our group was founded under the following purposes and principles:
  • to support existing and prospective house rabbit owners by way of verbal and written discourse, print materials and educational programs with the goal of improving the quality of life for both the rabbit and it’s human guardian(s).
  • to both raise awareness of house rabbits as domestic pets and promote their adoption to responsible individuals and families.
  • to provide support and services to homeless and rescued house rabbits under the care of like-minded rescue groups and organizations.
  • to work with similar groups at the local, state, national and international level (where applicable) in order to promote the same educational goals.
Although we are not affiliated with the House Rabbit Society, it should be noted that we agree with and follow closely the guidelines for rabbit care that have been set forth by the HRS. We see ourselves as a complement to, rather than in competition with, the HRS and it’s regional chapters. We believe that our existence is important to the local rabbit community as Dayton Rabbit is the only organization of it’s type in the area.

West Michigan Critter Haven
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Picture
WMCH is a 501c3, tax exempt, non-profit organization. Our rescue is composed of a network of foster families in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. As a rescue dedicated to the specialized needs of small animals,  we strive to bring the highest quality care to all the pets placed into our rescue. Exotic pets such as rabbits, ferrets, birds, guinea pigs, small lizards, and rodents will be cared for according to the most educated standards known. Indoor only housing, fresh daily greens, daily safe playtime within pet proofed rooms, safe litters and toys will be provided. Each foster and adopter will be thoroughly educated on the needs of that animal before a pet is placed into their care.

As educators we will teach the community proper care of these pets in order to enrich the lives of current and future pets, to establish a respect for the animals and to help reduce the number of abandoned and neglected pets relinquished each month. It will be our utmost priority to educate, promote and require alteration for every pet.
